We are pleased to announce the publication of the latest volume of Palimpsestes: Fiction/Non-fiction: que dit la traduction? The volume builds on a series of seminars and an international conference organized by Charles Bonnot and Clíona Ní Ríordáin as part of the activities of the international research group TRACT (Traduction et communication interculturelle), headed by Bruno Poncharal at the Sorbonne Nouvelle.

Edited by Charles Bonnot (Sorbonne Nouvelle), this stimulating volume explores the complex role of translation in the circulation of non-fiction texts in the context of the increasing critical awareness of the permeable border between fiction and non-fiction, and the problematic representation of reality in non-fiction texts. It is divided into three sections. The first examines the challenges that translators face in rendering texts, such as Thomas Huxley’s translations of tales of miracles, David Forster Wallace’s accounts of immersive experience and Svetlana Alexievitch’s reports on war, where the relationship between the author and their experience is a central writing and translation issue. The second section looks at the incidence of a writer’s ethos for translation, with articles on translating George Orwell, Philippe Soupault, Alex Wheatle and Faïza Guène. The third section focuses on how translators approach the translation of texts, such as detective novels or historical fiction, which reconstruct the real world.
